چکیده

The utility and documentation of traits and characteristics of Zebu, Bos indicus, cattle in beef production in the United States are discussed with reference to adaptation. Zebu cattle are uniquely suited to hot climates due to coat, hide, skin and hematological attributes. Form, growth and physiological aspects are unique genetic attributes which are different from those of Bos taurus cattle. Compared with Bos taurus cattle, Zebu cattle are lower in reproduction, later maturing, slower growing and lower in beef quality. Zebu cattle are valuable in crossbreeding, with adaptive aspects transmitted and large amounts of heterosis in growth, maternal effects and reproductive traits.

Genetic Diversity and Phylogenetic Relationship between Indigenous Cattle Breeds

Zebu breeds of cattle from southern part of India are well known for their adaptability to extreme climatic conditions, draught efficiency, disease resistance and poor nutritional environment. Selection of appropriate populations for conservation of such genetic resources is needed in view of preventing rapid erosion of animal genetic resources. Estimation of genetic diversity is essential to d...

Signatures of Selection for Environmental Adaptation and Zebu × Taurine Hybrid Fitness in East African Shorthorn Zebu

The East African Shorthorn Zebu (EASZ) cattle are ancient hybrid between Asian zebu × African taurine cattle preferred by local farmers due to their adaptability to the African environment. The genetic controls of these adaptabilities are not clearly understood yet. Here, we genotyped 92 EASZ samples from Kenya (KEASZ) with more than 770,000 SNPs and sequenced the genome of a pool of 10 KEASZ. ...

A study on genetic aspects of seed dormancy

Changes in seed dormancy were selected during the domestication of crop plants from wild-plant species, because some features of dormancy that provide ecological advantages presented agronomic disadvantages within a farmed system. Seed dormancy varies widely among seed batches, even for seeds of the same genotype, indicating large environmental influences. For genetic studies, it is essential t...

Physiological and cellular adaptations of zebu cattle to thermal stress.

During their separate evolution from Bos taurus, zebu cattle (Bos indicus) have acquired genes that confer thermotolerance at the physiological and cellular levels. Cattle from zebu breeds are better able to regulate body temperature in response to heat stress than are cattle from a variety of B. taurus breeds of European origin. Moreover, exposure to elevated temperature has less deleterious e...
